Covid Journal, April 10, 2020
I’m going to refrain from too much editorial for the next few days.
Military and police actions for enforcing by-laws have me very concerned. Civil liberty organizations should be as well. See below for contact information for both the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Amnesty International.
Here’s a quick survey of a few updates around the world:
- Ontario uses Covid to exempts itself from environmental regulations
- Canadian military arrives in Toronto to help enforce Covid rules (which is Martial Law, isn’t it?)
- France bans jogging outdoors
- Canada to implement $1 million fines and/or 3 years imprisonment for breach ofCovid confinement rules.
- Justin Trudeau acknowledges that the ‘current situation’ (ie. national house arrest) will continue until a vaccine is prepared, likely 12-18 months.
Folks, I’ll just keep repeating … we’re being eased into a permanent state of home isolation. Get used to it.
Some enlightening discussion …
Last, as people ‘gather’ (online at least) for various feasts and celebrations, please consider this article from Strong Towns talking about ‘Recipes for Disaster‘. We have to figure out how to return to being food independent and the sooner this conversation starts at a national level, the more comfortable people will be with other great challenges.
If you know someone that’s been fined with excessive penalties or imprisonment, please contact the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and/or Amnesty International. I will be posting this paragraph on all of my posts from now until our ‘gentle house isolation’ has drawn to a close.
