Add PostMedia to ‘Foreign Influence’ File
PostMedia is currently 66% owned by American media conglomerate Chatham Asset Management.
From the Securities and Exchange Commission, Washington D.C., April 3, 2023 —
The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged New Jersey-based Chatham Asset Management LLC and its founder, Anthony Melchiorre, in connection with improper trading of certain fixed income securities. Chatham and Melchiorre agreed to pay more than $19.3 million in combined disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and civil penalties to settle the charges.
These are not the people I want monopolizing news and information in Canada.
These are not the people that Canadians want meddling with our democracy and our elections.
But yet, they do.
Personally, I think it’s time for a full inquiry into all of the history and unsolicited political interference in Canadian elections – municipal, provincial and federal – of national and international media companies that interfere with our government.
Oh, and a merger between PostMedia and TorStar? Give me a fuck!ng break.
‘Existential threat’ my a$$.
After more than a decade of writing the legislation and pushing it down the throats of Canadians, we now have regulatory garbage like Bills C-11 and C-18, both of which are designed to limit competition in the news, media and internet spheres. Both pieces of legislation show an appalling lack on knowledge of how the internet works.
Tech giants like Facebook and Google have effectively been blocked out of the Canadian information marketplace. The holes will be filled with noise, conspiracy and charlatans who whine and moan louder than anyone else because American-owned media companies in Canada continue to give them a platform, without any way to authenticate the source.
The quality of Canadians information will decline rapidly because smaller companies and organizations will not have a larger venue on which to share their updates.
So, cancel your newspaper subscription.
