Canada Responds To Trump’s Trashy Tariff Tantrums
Happy Flag Day everyone!!
Every time Trump talks about how spongy we Canadians are, it just adds to the list of Canadians that would be more than happy with Canada being more independent of the United States.
He imposes tariffs when he says he won’t. He’s a grifter and a criminal. He can’t be trusted.
The people that support him can’t be trusted.
These are crazy days. They’re all going to drive the US into an economic crisis.
In Canada, the Resistance is growing. Ask Charlie Angus. Ask people who are boycotting travel to the US or who are now standing in grocery aisles staring at product labels, leaving ‘Made in USA’ products on the shelf.
In the US, there’s the 50501 Movement. 50 states, 50 protests, ONE movement and more judges are resisting pressure from the Republicans, including Republicans.
We’re all fighting back in our own way, but we need to do more at all levels.
How are you saying no to the madness in Washington? What organizations are you supporting? Who are you turning away from? Have you stopped with Facebook, Twitter, Amazon Prime, Disney or the thousands of other services that have become so conveniently intertwined with our lives?
It’s hard. But it has to be done.
The more American companies suffer, the more hope there is that they’ll reconsider their alliance with Trump.
Why? Because this is a great day to become a better, stronger and more independent Canada.
We all need to start looking at this like the great opportunity it is.
- Export taxes to generate revenue for Canadian businesses
- Better labeling requirements that would show country of origin for any imported ingredients
- Banning information garbage dumps like X and others
- Leveling a 100% tariff on all Tesla-related products
- Banning Starlink from Canadian airspace
- Blocking certain IP addresses from access to Canada (mainly to limit fake news)
- Ridding everything from school books to pharmaceuticals of American ownership
- ‘Jailbreaking’ tech that would let Canadian companies trade without Apple/Android fees
- Eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers
- Diversifying our list of valued trade partners
- Reconsider ANY subsidies to ANY American companies. Recall what we can and cancel the rest, especially crap birds like the F-35 that can’t even get off the ground in cold weather.
- Encourage piracy – Canadians are inundated with American content, from Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Tubi, Disney and much more. I suppose I shouldn’t say ‘encourage piracy’ but certainly remind Canadians that if they download content from other sources, any American copyright protection and pursuit will not be permitted.
A couple of days ago, Jim Stanford posted some additional thoughts about how this whole situation is making Canada emerge more patriotic and proud of its standing as a nation that’s independent of the United States … and how it can get much, much better … so long as we act now.
To preserve our viability as a going concern in the face of Trump’s aggression, Canada needs an emergency national response. This should include:
- Emergency aid for export industries while they retool and reorient marketing to both other countries and domestic consumers.
- Expanded access to employment insurance and other supports to help workers survive a disruption that will likely destroy one million direct jobs (and many more spillover impacts).
- Redirect the main thrust of our economic development strategy away from trade, and toward doing things by Canadians for Canadians. There’s lots to do in that regard. An emergency plan to build affordable housing, infrastructure, renewable energy, and domestically-oriented manufacturing could more than replace the jobs destroyed by Trump.
More Challenges in the US
In the US, challenges are growing. The Huffington post just identified 109 ways to fight back against what’s happening in the US right now.
Here’s a starter list and it’s something that ALL Canadians who care about Canada should follow as well:
- Learn about far-right movements and the propaganda they use, so you can identify and push back against them.
- Call out far-right dog-whistles and coded language.
- Contact your elected officials and voice your opinions.
- Vote for people who care about and stand up for you, the people you love, and the kind of country you want to live in.
- Vote out politicians who do not.
- Run for office.
- Attend a city council meeting or school board meeting and make your views known.
- Stop shopping at companies that don’t care about or reflect your values.
- Shop local/small whenever possible.
- Read and watch and listen to and support independent media that refuses to capitulate or bow to the new administration or its allies.
And on and on. Trump and his cabal have no idea what we can do when we want to. And we’re going to start now.
There’s so much more that we can do to liberate ourselves from the American yoke.
What are you doing to support Canada?
